Basically, you have two parts in every case.
The investigation, and the court trial.
When investigating, you search for evidence, cross-examine witnesses and/or suspects, and in court you use the evidence you find in the correct ways and moments to win the trial.
As you progress, so does the story. The cases tend to take quite a while to complete usually.
I think some people underestimate this though, since it sounds more boring than it actually is. If you love a good story, then this is a great game.
(Plus it makes court seem more interesting xD)
Don't go thinking everything wich happens in the game happens in a real courtroom though.
