Well, I believe that you definitely need good sync, a good song (that fits your theme of course), and originality.
In my opinion, originality is hard to come by this day and age. That's why when I make amv's...I use those funky songs no one (or barely anyone) knows about and I use such a diverse mix of anime and games, like Boktai. I like to keep the people guessing on how the amv will turn out.
I mean....everyone has made an amv using a Linkin Park song...or something as similar before. In my last like 4 projects....I used songs that I know no one has heard, or might of heard like once or twice.
Also...I like to make amv's with "Funky" songs because IMO, the songs are catchy and will keep you listening throughout the whole amv. They may be relatively short, but I rather have a short, intense amv, then have a long 4 minute amv...slapped with a boring part here and there (If you get what I mean by that anyway).
And that is what makes a good amv for me.
