What makes a teacher proud

Okay, so some of you may already know that I take karate. My current rank is shodan ho (brown with black stripe).

Anyway, we received a new student back in January. He's eleven year old, cute kid, very energetic, and very enthusiastic. We became friends pretty quickly. Over the course of the past few months, I've been spending a lot of time helping him train. Whenever he performs a punch incorrectly, I show him how to do it. If he's not doing a block properly, I guide him through that. You could say that I took him under my wing as my protege.

Recently, we saw the fruits of our labor. At a tournament that happened recently, the little guy won TWO GOLD MEDALS! He had only just begun karate in January. Most kids who start then don't usually win anything in tournaments, but he pulled it off. He's come such a long way in just a few short months and as a teacher, I'm truly proud of him and his accomplishment.

I can relate to this as well. Back in Maryland I was an assistant instructor, we had a huge class and split people by rank (whites in one, yellow stripes in one, yellow belts in ones, etc.) We rotated teachers after each test, and I became a favorite among the younger kids. I had two students I am proud to have had the privilege to teach. One was a 9 year old white belt named Mitchell(very shy) and the other was a 12 year old green belt named Katie. Both students had flaws and I helped them refine their talents. After a few weeks of training they knew what I expected from them and would line up and wait for my instructions. They would bow to me when I came up to them to teach and both called me sensai (we don't really have formal names in our class). After I moved I have been getting e-mails from that little boy who is working hard for when I visit next time to see him.
