SMT Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs The Soulless Army
I just got this game, and I have to say it´s keeping me VERY entertained with each step I take!
The year is Taisho 20, not far from the end of the Meiji era. Set over in Japan´s roaring 20s, the winds of change between the ancient customs and modern technology can be felt. People still wearing classic Japanese wardrobes, and the western wardrobes filling the closets.
Between this clash, an ancient custom occult to almost every person remains, the art of Devil Summoning.
A long time ago, Devil Summoners were an active tradition. That, until an event caused this tradition to start vanishing away. On the landmark, four Devil Summoners at the time were labeled as the best, and clans after their names were formed.
Each generation, a new chosen one able to use the power of Devil Summoning is chosen to inherit the name of the original summoner, and carry on the pride of the clan until the day of their death. The main character´s clan is the clan of Kuzunoha, in whichs he inherits the name of Raidou Kuzunoha the 14th.
The current era holds the clash between the old and the new, as mentioned earlier. A side effect of this clash from the decrease in religious beliefs, is the decreasement of the limit between the Real world where humans live, and the Dark world for the Demons enshrouded in eternal dusk.
Raidou is dispatched by the Clan´s elder into the Capital, place where the pool of Darkness gathers the most. In order to mantain a public cover, Raidou is assigned as a Junior detective for the Narumi Detective Agency, ran by Shouhei Narumi. Besides him, the elder also assigned him a supernatural partner, a feline named Gouto who has the wise advice you look for, as well strategies for investigation and Devil Summoning.
Some time later, Shouhei receives a call from an unknown girl, who asks for the assistance of the agency. After meeting her, her only request comes out of her mouth in the word "I want you... to kill me..." Before the two could even respond, a group of red caped soldiers snatch her, and leave without a word. The only clue, the Butterfly pendant the girl left behind.
Once again, Raidou is on the case to find out about the girl, as well the hostile red soldiers. But this simple event would spring over a chain of events breaking the boundaries between the legal, and the supernatural. Situation in which only, a Devil Summoner can save the day.
The Major players of this story.
Occupation: Devil Summoner, Junior Detective
Age: Late teens
Hey may looks like a student of Yumizuki High school and part time worker in the Narumi Detective Agency, but he really is in fact this generation´s Devil Summoner for the Kuzunoha clan to bear the name of "Raidou Kuzunoha".
His weapons as a man, are his sword and gun to protect the Capital´s safety. But his real weapons of mass destruction are the Demons he confines in the tubes he bears on the vest under his cloak.
His job as a detective, is doing all of the leg and musclework handling the cases, searching for clues, interrogating people, and even chase down the bad guys. But his real hobby, is to handle the "odd" cases in which he needs to use his loyal demons to carry the job.
Right by Raidou´s side, the feline Gouto always hangs around.
Occupation: Chief of the Narumi Detective Agency
Age: Early 30s
Shouhei operates the detective agency with an iron fist... or so we could expect. He is a sort of a ladies man, and a big phoney and prefer the cases of little effort and big payoff.
Besides being Raidou´s boss, he also is a good resource and friend to check into if you´re in trouble. By using his resources, he can point out the location of a needle in a haystack in less than you can say Jack Robinson.
Occupation: Reporter for the Capital Daily
Age: Early 20s
This gal is a long time friend of Shouhei, and strives to prove that Women can be twice than men in the labor field. Her pen name, "Kichou" comes from the feminist crusader Raichou Hiratsuka, idol of hers.
With her intuitive techniches, she can get you to say your darkest secrets with ease, and can easily charm the stripes off a zebra.
Occupation: Master of Gouma-den
Age: Older than you know
This mad genius posseses a jones to learn all of Life´s secrest, and settled himself in Japan in te basement of the Konnou-ya store where he can run his experiments uninterrupted.
He is a genius in the field of Devil Fusing, in which he can combine two demons to create a stronger one, pass on the abilities from one demon to another, and even fuse the demon with Raidou´s sword to make it deadlier.
With each practice, he develops new styles of working, so asking him for jobs frequently really comes in handy.
Occupation: Freshman at Ouran High School
Age: 15, going 16
Even if Kaya was born and raised as the inheritor of the Daodouji family fortune, she barely speaks to any other person in school, and the mansion servants treat her as one of her own to cheer her up.
Under her schoolgirl eyes, a rumor about a family curse haunts her right at becoming 16 years old, and contacts the Narumi Detective agency.
Lots of weird stuff has been going on in the capital, and perphaps the dame´s bloodline is at the center of the case.
Occupation: Dark Summoner
Age: Unknown
This charismatic priest was thought to be dead after multiple assasination attempts back in 1916. Where he exactly obtained his abilities as a Devil Summoner are unknown, and offers his services to the highest bidder. And since he seems to be a major suspect and a hire hand, the question is: Who could be crazy enough to hire a Devil Summoner in a bad mood?
As Raidou uses tubes, Rasputin uses Matryoshkas to hold his demons, or Russian nesting dolls.
Feel the roaring 20´s! A detective´s job.
Devil Summoner is an exquisite combination of Japenese and Western cultures at its best era. During most of the game, you´ll be running around the capital being followed by Gouto and a demon of your choice. You´ll be talking to people to obtain clues of where to go next, as well play detective by using a detective´s tricks. From slipping in ammounts of money to easen the concience of people, and even give them the Fish eye like Inspector Heiji Goyoda in Ryusei no Rockman.
As you advance through the story divided in Episodes, you can retreat back to the Agency to check previous episode files for evidence and a refresh on the facts and details of the case so far. You can also obtain Shouhei´s wise advice, and turn in your report to save your game in 99kb in a PS2 memory card.
Not everything in the game is playing good cop, you´ll also have to duke out against the baddies and demons in your way, and here´s there the Megaten series takes a big turn.
Devil Summoner Showdown!
Battles are no longer turn based, Raidou and the demon of his choice are taken to the battlefield of the area, in which the player has full control of Raidou´s actions. From slashing, to shooting, and switching Demons in the middle of the battle.
If a demon you´re fighting proves useful, you can try using its weakness to render it vulnerable to use your Arts of Confinement, in which Raidou uses his power to seal the demon into one of his tubes. The line between confining and not confining a demon depends on how weak it is, and its current level.
In the battle´s end, both Raidou and the active demon are given Experience points to level up and raise stats, and the Demon in question also gains Loyalty points which determine the demon´s loyalty. Only a fully loyal demon can be used for Demon Fusion.
Demonic Detectives!
Demons don´t just take the Bad Cop´s role, they also develop detective skills to use on the field. From reading people´s minds, to cooling down hot headed ones, pulling the right partner can help you to find a clue and obtain information.
Besides their skills, Demons can also go on Solo investigations since they aren´t visible to normal human eyes. The player controls the demon as they venture around for clues while Raidou takes a powder. But in case that the Demon gets in a battle, the player takes control of the demon with no backup from Raidou.
Once you are done investigation, return to Raidou and report your findings to resume control over Raidou and continue on.
The tunes, oh yeah.
The game´s soundtrack as a good combination of 20´s jazz, and even the Megaten series´s trademark gothic and Rock which rocks for Battle themes. I haven´t heard the entire soundtrack, but I am in my mission to check it out, even download my favorite tracks when I find it online.
Feedback so far.
I just began playing the game yesterday, and I am already in little after the start of the second episode... and there was a bathhouse fight! LOL of course, we could only see from their abdoments to up as Raidou smacked some good ones to the Yakuza thugs to obtain information on a suspect from their boss, who now likes Raidou and will help him on intelligence if he needs his help.
I´ve gotten a good hang of the Battle system, and I am trying to fuse two demons to obtain Jack Frost, Megaten´s mascot. XD
The graphics as always have their charm, but the battle gameplay renders Raidou in a small lag of nothingness after an action. But considering its duration of half second, it is really a very active system with the dialog of your demon to check what he´s babbling about. Each Demon has its personality, which I find great for the Azumi´s old lady personality with the "Don´t overeat while I´m gone dear!" XD
The current rating for Now, is 8.5/10, mostly an RPG for the RPG fans that really want to use their brains. After a more intense playthough, I may submit the Then rating.
