It's odd that your compy would die outright from a sudden loss of power. Perhaps it was not simply a loss of power, but an electrical surge? And if so, would an external drive really have survived the kind of power surge that would KO an ordinary compy?
I can't imagine anything else, short of very serious malware, that would cripple the OS in that way. From what I know (which isn't everything) you'd have to be in the middle of defragging your hard drive or some equally drastic memory management in order for the hard drive to be destroyed from a sudden blackout.
You know...I live right on the Gulf of Mexico (Stormytown, USA)... How long before this happens to me
