It's definitely ture that beating up a human player is far more satisfying when you know for sure it's a human. On the other hand, I suspect that we've been overstimating the incidence rate of d/c's. In other words, I'm guessing that even an opponent who knows he's losing will fight to the last breath, not to give you an honest victory but because it took so long to find a match over the Wii-fi. People can be very stubborn not to lose, even when overmatched. As for mechanical failures, I don't think those are likely to be a serious problem.
To put it a short way, human opponents probably won't chose to d/c and probably won't be forced to by a failed connection. Therefore, I think it's safe to say that most of the time you will usually fight the real human player from start to finish, and there's no need to worry about whether or not the player is, in fact, human.
If anyone has experience to contradict this, of course, I'm open to new ideas.
